“Yes, I do. Very much.”

“It’s quite quick though, don’t you think?”

“You’re not the first to say that; Holly even said it, but not me. I’m a great believer in living my life to the full, whatever that may entail. So falling in love with Holly is something that I’ll embrace.” I looked down at the woman in my arms, and my stomach clenched. “It doesn’t matter that it’s only a few weeks, love isn’t something that you can put a timescale on.”

“I thought I loved her mother. I think she thought that she loved me. Then Flash Brian, the carpet man came along.” James chuckled and shook his head. “In hindsight, he probably did me a big favour, but it still hurt. I don’t want that happening to Holly.”

I stared him straight in the eye.

“That’s not going to happen. I love Holly. I’ve never felt like this about anyone before—ever.”

“There’s no Audrey March in your past then,” James muttered.

“Sorry?”

“Nothing, lad. Just a joke between me and Holly.”

“You know on the way over here, after Maggie called,” I said, “I felt as though someone had ripped my heart out. The pain I felt in my chest and in my gut was unbearable. I could hardly breathe.”

“Hmm, that’s love for you.”

“I can’t imagine a day without her in my life, James.” A lump formed in my throat as the reality of what might have happened suddenly hit me. I was aware of how badly some car-jackings ended. “If she’d been badly hurt or—”

I blew out a breath, unable to form the words. James leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.

“Don’t think about it,” he replied. “Just be there for her, love her and support her.”

I felt as though he wanted to finish the sentence by saying “like I never have”, but he didn’t, he just stared at the fireplace.

Maggie came back into the room, carrying a tray with three mugs on it.

“Coffee, with a drop of brandy,” she said. “I didn’t make Holly one; I thought it best to let her sleep.”

We drank our coffee in silence, and then James and Maggie decided to go, both saying that they’d call later to see how Holly was doing. Holly continued to sleep, and once we were alone, I let my own eyes drift closed with my arms wrapped tightly around my world.
